Fire Inspectors extinguish fires, issue immediate threat to life notices

KINGSTON, ONT. / MARCH 21, 2024

Earlier today, Kingston Fire & Rescue, exercising powers under section 15 of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, has issued three immediate threat to life (ITL) notices at Belle Park.

Under the Act, fire inspectors who believe a risk of fire poses an immediate threat to life have the authority to enter on land or premises and remove anything that may constitute a fire menace or take any action urgently required to remove or reduce the threat to life.

Recent statements, such as this one, have been issued to offer transparency on the major increase of fires in the area, and to provide context for the issuance of ITLs and the removal of combustible materials and ignition sources.

Crews were on site at Belle Park Thursday morning to remove debris from the fire that occurred earlier this week. While on site, two additional fires were extinguished and three ITLs were issued. In one of the tents, an aluminum pot was being used for open air fires with charring on the combustible floor. Additionally, an electric space heater and candles were found.

removal of combustible materials and ignition sources.

“Responses to this area from Kingston Fire & Rescue have risen by 700% since 2018,” says Ted Posadowski, Chief Fire Prevention Officer. “Though there have been fires and emergency responses in this area in the past, the strain on emergency services in the past two months has been greater than KFR has ever seen. We continue to emphasize that fire prevention is key, and keeping people safe remains our top priority.”

Support services, including storage options for belongings, shelter space and transportation, are available for anyone affected by the recent fires and ITL notices.
