Seamlessly step into summer and plan your move, students!

April 17, 2024

Students: Congratulations on finishing your academic year! If you're moving, make sure you have a plan to make your transition smooth, neat and safe.

Here are a few steps you should be sure to take:

  • Close your Utilities Kingston account. A minimum of five business days are required to ensure the account is closed on the date requested. You can do this through the Utilities Kingston website or by phone at 613-546-1181. Note: Hydro One electricity customers can call 1-800-434-1235. Union Gas customers can call 1-888-774-3111.
  • Dispose of any unwanted items properly. Not sure where it goes? Use the City’s Waste Lookup tool. Purchase additional bag tags at your local retailer. For hazardous materials such as batteries, cleaners and aerosols, visit the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 196 Lappan’s Lane. Household batteries will be collected along with your curbside waste from April 22 – 26.
  • Take advantage of Giveaway Day! Don’t want to take your books or lamps with you? On Saturday, April 20, put unwanted reusable items curbside – your neighbours may be interested and you'll be diverting waste from landfills.
  • Drop excess and oversized garbage off at paid disposal sites. These locations charge a fee for waste disposal. Items brought to them end up in landfill.
    • Waste Management: 62 St Remy Pl., 613-549-7401. Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the City’s request, Waste Management will have extended hours to help with student moving. This facility will be open Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Waste Connections of Canada: 1266 McAdoo’s Ln., 613-548-4428. Please call ahead for hours of operation.
  • Be a good neighbor! Be mindful of the property standards and solid waste bylaws and leave your property clean. The Yard and Streets and Property Standards bylaws require yards to be free of any garbage or debris. There will be bylaw officers enforcing these laws, so plan ahead.
