Today marks a significant milestone for Partners in Mission Food Bank, as the organization arrives at 40 years of service to the Kingston community.
In 1984, A study was conducted by the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph to determine the greatest needs in the City of Kingston. In an effort to eliminate hunger in the area, they began the food bank. The first food collection was received on June 17, 1984.
Over the decades, it has continued to expand, operating out of several locations before settling into its current home at 140 Hickson Avenue in 2003. Today, the food bank stands as a pillar of support, with 93 cents of every dollar donated going towards their food hamper program.
In 2023, Partners in Mission distributed an average of 1,542 hampers monthly, and 3,984 households accessed the program.
Recognizing the occasion and honouring the organization's commitment to addressing food insecurity in the region, June 17, 2024, was declared Partners in Mission Food Bank Day by Kingston City Council at their last meeting. The motion was put forward by Councillor Brandon Tozzo and Mayor Bryan Paterson, commemorating the organization's 40-year journey and encouraging continued support and awareness of their mission.
Partners in Mission has not gone unnoticed on the national stage, being named a Top 10 Canadian Food Bank and a Top 10 Canadian Impact Charity by Charity Intelligence for the past few years.
As Kingston residents join in celebrating Partners in Mission Food Bank Day, there are numerous opportunities for community members to get involved. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, everyone can play a role in ensuring that the food bank continues to provide essential support to individuals and families in Kingston.
