"With our Pops Series, we always ask ourselves 'How can we do something that's never been done, or how can we enhance something amazing with the power of a live orchestra?' We're so excited to be bringing one of the most compelling Canadian series of the 21st century - Murdoch Mysteries - to a live audience in Kingston. Fusing screen and stage is something we've done well in the past and we hope to one up ourselves this time around." says Evan Mitchell, Kingston Symphony Music Director.
“Our fans are some of the most loyal and passionate you’ll find anywhere, and Kingston has always held a special place in the show’s history,” says Thomas Craig. “I’ve had the pleasure of filming here more than once, and the crowds that come out are incredible. We’re chuffed to be bringing something this unique to a city that’s supported us over the years. This isn’t just a concert - it’s a rare chance to see how the music behind the show is created, and how it breathes life into every scene. With the Kingston Symphony joining us, I reckon the audience is in for something incredible.”
Since 2008, Murdoch Mysteries has captivated audiences around the world with its mix of crime-solving and historical intrigue. Set in Toronto during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it tells the tale of Detective William Murdoch as he uses his smarts and cutting-edge techniques to crack complex cases. With over 300 episodes of sleuthing goodness in the series so far, new episodes from Season 19 are currently airing on Mondays on CBC and CBC Gem.
A big part of the series' success is due to the music of Robert Carli. The show's distinctive atmosphere is shaped by Carli's score of period-appropriate orchestration with subtle modern touches. The mood of the show alternates seamlessly between mysterious, whimsical, romantic, and dramatic - whatever tone is required for each story. A recent episode from 2023, Season 16's "Murder in F Major," sees the director of Toronto's symphony murdered, with Murdoch suspecting that jealous musicians are responsible. It's a thrilling episode full of intrigue.
Great mystery scores don’t just accompany - they conspire, and this episode is a great example of music moulding our emotions. As part of the concert, the Kingston Symphony will perform the live symphonic score as this episode is played on screen.
