At their last meeting, Council debated a motion that would have designated playgrounds and other child-focused spaces as “Child Safety Zones.”

Brought forward by Councillor Conny Glenn, the motion proposed amendments to the Parks and Community Standards By-Laws to prohibit temporary shelters, open-air drug use, and related paraphernalia within 50 metres of playgrounds, schools, and splash pads. Glenn explained the intent as a part of a pathway forward on the opioid crisis, balancing the safety and well-being of all residents.

However, councillors raised concerns about enforceability and potential legal conflicts, especially concerning the 2023 court order restricting the City’s ability to regulate sheltering in public spaces.

Ultimately, Glenn withdrew the motion but signaled plans to bring back a revised version after further consultation.
