Downtown Kingston Launches Free Learn to Skate Program with Support from Jumpstart
January 19, 2026
Kingston, ON – The Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area (BIA) is proud to announce a new Learn to Skate program at the outdoor rink in Springer Market Square, made possible through a grant from Jumpstart. Designed for children ages 5-12, the five-week program will run every Sunday beginning January 18, with the lessons and equipment provided at no cost to participants.
“There are few experiences more quintessentially Canadian than skating outdoors on a frozen surface,” says Sandi Griffiths, the events manager with the BIA. “It’s exciting to share that experience with young children and help them build confidence on the ice.”
Program spots filled up quickly with interested families being referred by the local Boys and Girls Club and KEYS. Public skating at the Square will remain available throughout the program, as lessons will use only a portion of the ice surface each Sunday.
The BIA also operates a skate rental service for both children and adults at Springer Market Square at select times. The rental cost is $10 for 90 minutes. For more information about all the programs and events in downtown Kingston, visit downtownkingston.ca.
