A six-month review of Kingston’s emergency shelter at 928 Sydenham Road has found positive results.

The facility, operated by Doors of Compassion in partnership with the City of Kingston, was initially met with concerns about its location outside the downtown core. Council moved forward with the site and committed to reviewing its impact after six months.

The review found the shelter supported 112 individuals and recorded more than 5,200 bed stays during the reporting period of February to August. Fourteen people transitioned out of homelessness during the period, and that number has since climbed to 26.

“I think it’s really important that we celebrate the wins,” said Councillor Wendy Stephen when the report was discussed at Council’s last meeting. “This is a win for our community. And after we spend a moment feeling good about this, there’s still more work to do.”
