Roughly 1 in 3 households in the city of Kingston struggle with food insecurity, leading the city of Kingston to declare a food insecurity emergency in 2025. This Spring, the Food Sharing Project announced its latest initiative to help counteract this crisis by opening a school-based food hub at Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School. The Regi School Food Hub will provide prepared hot and cold lunches at no cost for up to 1500 students at three local schools, expanding on FSP’s “Lunch is Ready!’ program that provides nutritious, complete meals to any student, no questions asked. “Lunch is Ready!” launched in 2025 with funding from the National School Food Program. Since then, the program has expanded to produce and deliver more than 2,100 meals each week directly to 20 schools.
We sat down with the Food Sharing Project’s Executive Director Andy Mills, and Board Chair Brenda Moore to discuss the new project and why it’s needed in Kingston.
