The DAN School of Drama and Music Presents their Semi-Annual Major: Paradise Lost

February 16, 2024

A theatrical adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost by Erin Shields, directed by

award-winning Canadian performance-maker Evalyn Parry.

Inspired by John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, the production of the same name
delves into the timeless tale of the fall of humanity, exploring themes of good and evil.
Shields' reimagining of this classic work injects new vitality into the narrative, offering a
fresh perspective that resonates with contemporary audiences, delving into themes
such as power, hierarchies, binaries, and patriarchy.

Evalyn Parry, former artistic director at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and creator of
the acclaimed production SPIN, takes on the directorial reins alongside Queen’s
students Nic Lindegger and Elsa McKnight. Parry was drawn to the script for its clever
and humorous take on many foundational Western origin narratives.

The production is a collaborative effort involving approximately 80 Queen’s students
who contributed their talents in producing, designing, acting, and more to create a
truly unique and outstanding theatrical experience. Parry acknowledges the significant
contributions of the acting company in crafting the heightened, mythic characters, and
praises the fantastic design team for creating a warehouse-inspired space filled with
scaffolding—a creative playground for exploring epic ideas and power dynamics within
Shield’s wonderful text.

Audiences of all backgrounds are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend, not
only to support and appreciate the young artists involved but also to be inspired by the
calibre of professional-grade theatre on display.
