Queen’s distributes solar eclipse glasses to local community and schools

Beginning March 25, Queen’s University will be distributing 120,000 certified eclipse glasses, free-of-cost to ensure members of the Queen’s and Kingston community can safely experience the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8.

To supply the glasses to members of the Kingston community, the university has partnered with Kingston Frontenac Public Library to offer glasses through each of the library branches. Members of the Queen’s University community can pick up their glasses by visiting one of the eight locations on campus.

The university has also partnered with Limestone District School Board, Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, and local private schools to provide elementary and high school staff and students with access to glasses.

The Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy is leading local community outreach around the eclipse. Through interactive  workshops at 80 local schools, they aim to provide education of the science of eclipses, generate excitement, and outline safety measures as part of the eclipse ambassador program in the weeks leading up to April 8.

Queen’s University experts Robert Knobel and Nikhill Arora are available to speak to media about how to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse.
