Local land trust offers free online event about the birds of Belle Island

January 20, 2025

A few kilometers from downtown Kingston, surrounded by the Cataraqui River, sits Belle Island. Its 12-hectare woodland provides habitat for a variety of species.

On Sunday, January 26 at 4 pm, the Land Conservancy for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is hosting a webinar on the bird species that winter on the island.

Birding enthusiasts Hilbert Buist and Kathy Webb will show photographs of the birds, talk about their identification characteristics, and invite questions from participants.

“I look forward to showing photographs of approximately 40 species of birds I see on daily visits to this remarkable natural space in the heart of Kingston,” says Buist.

Webb will talk about e-Bird and other online platforms used by people interested in birds.

For the second part of the webinar, people who have submitted one or two of their own photographs of birds they have seen in the winter in this region will have a chance to talk about what they saw and where, and find out more from the presenters.

“Seeing all the photographs is interesting and fun,” notes Mary Alice Snetsinger the host of the webinar, “Photographers may be new to photography, got a lucky shot with their phone, or be an experienced photographer. We all learn a lot.”

In a random draw, four participants will each receive a $25 gift card from Urban Nature Store. “We’re grateful to have the Urban Nature Store as the sponsor for this event”, adds Snetsinger.

Registration is online through Eventbrite.
