February is Black History Month, and to celebrate this month the Limestone District School Board (LDSB) and the LCVI Student BIPOC Affinity Group are hosting an opening ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute from 4–6 p.m.

Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to attend. The event promises community, connection, and celebration replete with food, music, and dancing.

Entertainment will include Ruthy's Reading Room and a performance by Cassel Miles as Josiah Henson.

Malika Rouse, a student at LCVI and co-organizer of the event, spoke with the Beaver about what attendees can expect and the importance of celebrating, and learning about, black history.

“This is our third year hosting the event. It was started by a student that was here before me but has since graduated,” said Rouse. “We’re going to have mingling, performances such as a monologue by Cassel Miles, and a line dancing activity.”

Rouse, along with principal Margaret Connelly, and LDSB Equity and Inclusion Consultant, Andrea Barrow, will also share some words.

“It’s all about bringing people together, including other black students and families-and everyone, in general,” expressed Rouse. “I think Black History Month is very important.”

When asked how students can learn more about black history, Rouse emphasized the importance of not “escaping reality”.

“I think it’s important that, throughout your life, you seek out opportunities to learn about black history, whether through reading, podcasts, or really just anything that engages you,” said Rouse.
