Kingston’s One Roof Hub Wins National Award for Youth Homelessness Prevention

May 4, 2025

Home Base Housing is proud to announce that its’ One Roof Youth Services
Hub has been nationally recognized with the 2024 Making the Shift Youth Homelessness
Prevention Award by A Way Home Canada. The award celebrates leadership in youth
homelessness prevention and diversion and recognizes outstanding contributions to creating
long-term, sustainable change.

Presented annually, the Making the Shift awards highlight organizations across Canada that
demonstrate excellence in keeping youth out of homelessness through early intervention,
wraparound supports, and community collaboration. One Roof stood out as a model for
integrating services that address the complex needs of vulnerable youth—all under one roof.
“This national recognition validates what our team, partners, and community have long
known—that prevention is not only possible, it’s essential,” said Tom Greening, Executive
Director of Home Base Housing. “One Roof is proof that when we meet young people where
they are, with the right supports and respect, we can prevent chronic homelessness before it
begins.”

Serving youth aged 12–24, One Roof provides access to mental health and addictions supports,
housing navigation, employment readiness, life skills training, and cultural programming. The
model emphasizes early, barrier-free access to support services to reduce the risk of youth
falling through the cracks.

This award comes at a pivotal moment, as Home Base Housing continues construction on the
Kingston Youth Services Hub, a multi-phase expansion that will provide supportive housing,
wellness programming, and an arts & culture centre for homeless and at-risk youth. While the
new spaces are still being built, One Roof is already changing lives—one youth at a time. The
success of One Roof—and the broader work of Home Base Housing—is only possible thanks to
the deep collaboration of youth-serving community partners who operate out of the hub, and
the ongoing support of the United Way.
