KFPL’s International Week of Deaf People programs highlight sign language and accessibility
September 10, 2024
International Week of Deaf People (IWDeaf), observed during the last week of September, is a global
initiative that champions the rights of Deaf individuals and emphasizes the importance of sign language
and accessibility. This year, Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) invites the community to join in
programs developed with S5Waves that nurture inclusive communication and build stronger connec-
tions through American Sign Language (ASL).
On Sept. 26, the Teaching Your Baby to Sign workshop at the Calvin Park Branch will provide parents
and caregivers with practical tools to support early communication and literacy by introducing ASL to
young children. While the program isfor adults, children are welcome to attend. Registration opens on
Sept. 14.
The following day, Sept. 27, families can drop into a special edition of Rhythm and Rhyme at the Rideau
Heights Branch, led by an experienced ASL Mother Goose Parent-Child Instructor. This event blends
rhyming games and activities with sign language, creating a welcoming environment for children and
parents to learn and connect. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Featuring experienced Deaf instructors, these programs promote accessibility and provide an authen-
tic understanding of sign language and Deaf culture, supporting KFPL’s values of inclusivity and respect
and our mission to advance literacies,” said Brianne Peters, Librarian, Children's Services.
“Participation in these events also supports the global movement for sign language rights, aligning with
this year’s IWDeaf theme, Sign up for Sign Language Rights.”
