At council’s last meeting, community members and councillors engaged in passionate discussion over fencing options for the baseball diamond in City Park.
Fencing was put in place around the diamond for Kingston to host the 2024 Little League Canada Championship. While originally a temporary measure, council decided to reconsider options for fencing around the diamond as it continued to be used.
Council members were presented with five options, including permanent and temporary fencing options, and a late addition to keep the existing fencing.
Community members stood before council to voice concerns regarding safety, aesthetics, and the park’s multi-use function.
Once added to the mix, the option of leaving the existing fence quickly became the most popular, with councillors citing safety, costs, and the potential for attracting national tournaments as reasons to leave the current fence.
After deliberation, council voted 9-4 to keep the existing fencing.
