City council voted last night to proclaim July 15th Extreme Heat Awareness Day in the city, following a proposal put forth by Seniors for Climate Action Now’s Kingston Chapter.
The date coincides with a planned press conference that the group will be holding at City Hall on July 15th.
CFRC spoke with Tara Kainer, a member of SCAN about the reason for group’s proposal as well as their plans for the press conference.
The group hopes to raise awareness of the environmental and health risks of extreme heat events, and is advocating for the implementation of a municipal bylaw that would cap the allowable temperature in rental units in the summer months at a maximum of 26 degrees celsius, in line with the regulation Kingston put in place for units with existing air conditioner units.
