Council votes to rename Indian Road as Aki Road

After years of debate, Indian Road has a new name.

At their last meeting, Council voted 8-5 to officially rename Indian Road as Aki Road.

The decision follows a process launched in June 2025, when Council voted to begin consultations to choose a new name after concerns were raised that the name is outdated and derogatory.

The proposal remained divisive throughout the consultation process. While supporters argued the name change was an important step toward reconciliation, some residents opposed both the change itself and how consultation was done. 

The approved plan also includes $250 in compensation for each residential unit on the street and a commemorative plaque recognizing the neighbourhood’s history and the significance of the new names.

Staff have been directed to complete the renaming process by the first quarter of 2027.
