Limestone City Co-operative Housing (LCCH) was turned down by council at their meeting last week. It was decided the project will have to fend for itself to secure the intended property at 900 Division St.
The LCCH is a non-profit aiming to build an innovative co-operative housing and vertical farm project, proposing 284 affordable housing units in the city’s North end.
Council was presented with two options; to advance work on the divestment of the city owned property to LCCH, or to put the property on the open market.
Council voted 7-4 for the latter option. While this means LCCH still has the opportunity to compete for the land, proponents of the project have doubts.
“…It’s going to kill this project,” stated Counc. Jeff McLaren. “We are not equipped to compete in a for-profit, shark-infested ocean.”
