City shifts approach to The Tragically Hip final concert anniversary celebrations after funding concerns

The City will move ahead with plans to mark the 10th anniversary of The Tragically Hip’s final concert in Kingston this summer, after Council approved a revised approach requiring no new funding from municipal reserves.

A previous proposal to allocate up to $350,000 from the City’s Working Fund Reserve was deferred in February following concerns from councillors and the public. In response, staff returned with a plan funded through existing budgets, sponsorships, and outside funding sources.

Confirmed programming includes Hip-themed features in a free music exhibition at City Hall and the Rockin’ the Square concert in August, public art installations, and a new musical at the Kingston Grand Theatre.

Council approved the updated plan, with one opposing vote. Staff will reveal more details in a report in June.
