City and Tourism Kingston hit play on Kingston Music Strategy with new strategic partnership and call for participation in Advisory Committee
March 11, 2024
The Kingston Music Strategy, approved by City Council in December 2023, is now a plan in action.
To lead the Strategy forward, the City of Kingston and Tourism Kingston have partnered to support a Music Officer position. The Music Officer will implement the Strategy, create conditions for the music industry to thrive and grow and act as a liaison between the City and the music community.
The Music Officer role is an expansion of Tourism Kingston’s existing Music Commissioner position, held by Moira Demorest, and it will remain a key position within Tourism Kingston. With over 20 years of experience in the music industry, Demorest will continue to advocate for and showcase artists in Kingston, collaborating with the City and its Arts & Culture Services department, Tourism Kingston’s Film & Media portfolio and other community partners.
“It’s an honour and a pleasure to take on the expanded role of Music Officer, and to have been a part of the creation of the Kingston Music Strategy,” says Demorest. “Kingston is poised for immense growth in all facets of the music community, from live performances to recording and production, and I’m excited to continue to promote that development.”
As part of the strategy's rollout, Tourism Kingston, in partnership with the City, is seeking community members to join the Kingston Music Advisory Committee. Comprising musicians, industry experts and community advocates, this Committee will oversee the implementation of the Strategy, help develop annual music work plans and advise on ongoing needs in the music community.
“This is a great opportunity for community members to help bring the Music Strategy to life and shape the future of the music scene in Kingston,” says Danika Lochhead, Acting Director, Arts and Culture Services, City of Kingston. “Community involvement is a key part of the Kingston Music Strategy and is integral to its success.”
Community members who want to get involved are invited to submit a letter of interest to Music@TourismKingston.com by March 29. Review the Terms of Reference on the Tourism Kingston website.
The Kingston Music Strategy was developed to support musicians and music in Kingston by cultivating spaces and places, empowering and investing in talent, amplifying connection and visibility and bolstering City leadership and support. Its implementation marks a significant milestone in the City's commitment to nurturing its music community.
