Kingston, September 11th, 2024 - CFRC 101.9 FM is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Airwave YGK Musicians-in-Residence Program funded by the City of Kingston and Kingston Arts Council.
Following the tremendous success of CFRC’s Airwave YGK DJ Artists-in-Residence Program in Winter-Spring 2023-24, Kingston’s only campus-based community radio station is expanding Airwave YGK programming to welcome young and/or emerging musicians and bands to its airwaves.
CFRC opened applications this month for local young and emerging musicians and bands to make use of the station’s studios as an incubator space to create and rehearse new music, to perform live on air with video simulcast, to undertake artist interviews to share news about upcoming performances and even single/EP and album releases, and to enjoy in-house technical support and advice during their residencies. Musicians-in Residence are also paid for their work, will receive studio recordings of their performances, and may have opportunities to participate in a live broadcasted capstone concert at The Broom Factory in late Autumn 2025 sponsored by the Kingston Music Office.
Musicians-in-Residence alongside interested community members will also have opportunities to take part in various industry workshops led by partner community industry professionals. These workshops, which will be open to the public for a small fee, will cover areas including how to set up a home space for band practice; songwriting and composition; working with live venue sound technicians; and applying for grants, festivals and promoter representation.
“We’re so excited to launch this new initiative,” says Dinah Jansen, CFRC’s Executive Director.
“We know that young and emerging musicians and bands in our community often find difficulty finding space to create, develop and even rehearse new music and also secure new opportunities to be heard by new audiences,” she adds. “We have both the studio space and the airtime to support and broadcast their creativity.”
“CFRC has been the community leader in the promotion and broadcasting of specifically local events and music for over a century, and we are delighted to support our local talent, to help them establish themselves in our own community, and to provide them with opportunities to grow professionally and take their music to the next level locally, regionally, and beyond.”
Applications for Fall and Winter Airwave YGK Musician Residencies are due September 30th, 2024. Full details on the program and how to apply are available here.
In addition to the new residency program, CFRC also welcomes back local DJ Mat Almeida this fall to deliver a new round of beginner level DJ workshops to interested campus and community participants.
Almeida facilitated the City-funded Airwave YGK DJ workshop series in Winter 2024 guiding participants through a six-week introductory course on DJ skills covering areas including equipment nomenclature and set up; various techniques including beat, phrase, key & gain matching, DJ FX, EQ looping, echo & filter and more. Participants in the new course also have opportunities to create DJ sets and perform them live from CFRC’s studios later this fall. This autumn’s course starts September 23rd at CFRC in Carruthers Hall at Queen’s University. Registration is on a first come first served basis and can be done here where information including dates, times, and curriculum are also available.
