As of this week, a major habitat restoration project is now underway at one of Kingston’s most beloved natural spaces.
Cataraqui Conservation has begun work on the Lemoine Point Conservation Area Grassland Habitat Restoration Project.
The project covers more than 22 hectares of land at the southern end of Lemoine Point, where the open grassland and native plants have gradually been encroached on by gray dogwood and other woody shrubs.
That change has affected some of the species that rely on the open grassland habitat, including the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark, which are both birds listed as Threatened under the federal Species At Risk Act.
David Ellingwood, General Manager of Cataraqui Conservation, discusses with CFRC how the project will unfold and impact the future of Lemoine Point, with completion expected in spring of 2027.
