The man charged with murder and attempted murder in last month's deadly stabbings near Kingston’s Integrated Care Hub (ICH) made a brief court appearance and was given an extensive list of people he is not permitted to contact while in custody.

Justice of the Peace Ruth Campbell presided over Courtroom 2 at the Kingston Ontario Court of Justice on Wellington Street on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. Accused murderer Andre Wareham appeared by video from Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee.

Wareham is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in the violent attacks on and around Montreal Street on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. Those attacks led to the deaths of 38-year-old Taylor Wilkinson and 41-year-old John Hood, according to police, and the hospitalization of a third, unidentified victim, who sustained "serious injuries." Following the stabbings, he engaged police in an hours-long standoff.

Today, however, 47-year-old Wareham appeared earnest, polite, and apologetic on behalf of his lawyer, Steven Hinkson of Hinkson Law in Toronto, who was in Sudbury for a trial and unable to attend the hearing.

Unfortunately, the duty counsel did not have any instructions from Hinkson on how to proceed. Campbell asked Wareham how long the trial would last, ostensibly assuming Hinkson may have given him some idea how long the trial might take. Wareham said he didn’t know and was unsure how to proceed. Duty counsel suggested that a two-week adjournment would be sufficient based on the seriousness of the charges.

Campbell ordered the adjournment, and provincial Crown attorney Shawn Eagles added that “the Kingston police have provided a more comprehensive list” of the individuals with whom Wareham should have no contact while he is in custody.

Campbell added 25 individual names to the no-contact order and read them aloud for Wareham.

Kingstonist will continue to report on this case as it proceeds through the court system.
