CFRC Launching DJ Skills Workshops in October 2023

CFRC 101.9 FM through the support of the City of Kingston and Kingston Arts Council will launch Airwave YGK DJ workshops for beginners in October 2023.  These are BEGINNER LEVEL WORKSHOPS offered by local professional DJ Alex Wyatt aka A Lazy DJ.

Community members ages 17 and above and Queen's Students may register NOW for our Fall 2023 Airwave YGK DJ Workshop Series! 

All workshops will be held at CFRC starting at 6 PM October 16th, 23rd & 30th; November 13th and 27th, and December 4th.

Schedule of Workshops and Curriculum Overview

October 16th 6 PM

• Introduction to DJing- studio and equipment orientation, event planning best practices, choosing music, themes & styles, performance preperation, ensuring continuity, etc.

October 23rd 6 PM

• Intro to DJ equipment- equipment nomenclature & set up; use of mixer, decks, FX, EQ, faders & crossfaders, cueing, tempo & pitch, looping, etc.

October 30th 6 PM

• Intro to DJ Techniques Part 1- Beat matching & Phrase Matching-how to's and hand's on practice 

November 13th 6 PM

• Intro to DJ Techniques Part 2- Gain matching & Key matching, cue points and more plus how to's and hand's on practice

November 27th 6 PM

• Intro to DJ Techniques Part 3- DJ FX and EQ-looping, echo & filter, set-building best practices & how to's and hands on practice

December 4th 6 PM

• Live on Air Mini-Mixes-participants prepare up to 15 minutes of content to play live on air from CFRC's broadcast studio

Rates:*

Non-refundable fees must be paid upon registration to hold your place in workshop series. 
Community members ages 17 and above-$12-20 PWYC 
Queen's Students-free with paid optional CFRC student fee.

*Price quoted captures ALL workshops.  Each workshop is literally $2.  Yeah.  For real.  :D However, if you like, feel free to donate more when you register...additional funds do go a long way to keeping this kind of programming alive!

Additional Airwave YGK Programming

December 6th 9 PM at Grad Club ($10 admission)

• DJ Dance Party-featuring local artists (tbd) and workshop participants as openers

January-April 2024- Artist Residencies-stay tuned for details on artist residencies in Winter 2024.  Fall Workshop participants will have opportunities to hone more advanced level skills with local DJs, turntablists and experimental sound artists who will also perform live on air.  Winter workshop rates will be at par with fall rates listed below.  Paid artist residency applications to offer workshops and perform live on air opening in October.
