Tim Murray Quintet @ Brandees, May 25

90-logo1CFRC 101.9FM, Kingston’s only campus and community radio station and the longest-running campus-based broadcaster in the world, presents a very special jazz concert in celebration of the station’s 90th anniversary. On Friday, May 25, join CFRC friends and alumni at Brandees, 178 Ontario Street, for a performance and CD launch by the Tim Murray Quintet, starring Queen’s alumni who celebrate their 50th reunions this spring. You can read more about the Quintet and their story here. in-the-music-room The Quintet will be joined by the Septometrists of Jazz, an ensemble of current Queen’s School of Music students performing an opening set. tim-murray-piano-and-hornsDoors open at 8pm with showtime at 8:30 sharp. Tickets are $12, in advance through Ticketscene.ca or at the door the night of the concert. CDs of the Tim Murray Quintet’s 50th anniversary concert, recorded last year at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, will be available for sale at the show. Krysta Williams, “Indigenous made media: old and new forms of tellings our truths and stories”

In celebration of Aboriginal Awareness Week at Queen’s, this talk explores how Indigenous people, particularly youth, are using and reinventing media from storytelling to social networks. Krysta Williams is an Indigenous Feminist and Turtle clan from Moravian of the Thames First Nation. She is a traditional singer and drummer, has a degree in Psychology and Spanish and Latin American Studies from the University of Waterloo and is the Lead Youth Advocate of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network, a continent-wide organization by and for Native youth.

This is the third and final event of the CFRC-OPIRG Anniversary Speaker Series, celebrating Black History Month, International Women’s Day, Aboriginal Awareness Week, 90 years of CFRC and 20 years of OPIRG Kingston.

AN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S WEEK EVENT
TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2012

CFRC 101.9FM, in collaboration with OPIRG Kingston, the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre and the Queen’s Coalition Against Racial and Ethnic Discrimination (QCRED), present an International Women’s Week event with Toronto-based journalist and feminist Ronak Ghorbani.

Ghorbani has written for publications such as NOW Magazine, Exclaim! and Rabble.ca. She is the arts editor for Shameless, an award-winning, nationally distributed feminist magazine for teen girls and transgender youth. Her presentation, “Youth in Revolt: Reflections on International Women’s Day” focuses on young women’s involvement in global political uprisings and activist organizing from the Arab Spring, to riots against austerity in Greece, to student movements in Chile.

The event takes place on Queen’s University Campus in Ellis Hall, Room 324 at 6pm on Tuesday, March 6. The event is open to the public and all are welcome. Admission is free. Donations will be collected in support of CFRC and OPIRG Kingston.

This is the second event in the CFRC-OPIRG Anniversary Speaker Series, celebrating Black History Month, International Women’s Day, Aboriginal Awareness Week, 90 years of CFRC and 20 years of OPIRG Kingston.
