Reclaim Your Radio! November 14
On Monday, November 14, 2011, campus and community radio stations across Canada will participate in “Reclaim your Radio,” a special, day-long broadcast celebrating the 25th anniversary of the National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA), the launch of an NCRA-led campaign to reserve frequencies for campus and community radio stations, and the 11th annual Media Democracy Day. The broadcast will air live between 12-8pm ET from 8 host stations and be rebroadcast by more than two dozen participating stations nationwide. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the Web.
2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the NCRA, an organization committed to volunteer-driven, non-profit, community-oriented radio across Canada, incorporated on July 14, 1986 and representing more than 75 stations. Over the coming year, NCRA members and supporters will be asking the Canadian government to reserve at least one frequency in every community for campus and community radio stations, to ensure that all Canadians have access to locally-produced, non-profit, community-access radio. This year also marks the 11th annual Media Democracy Day, a global movement celebrating action and education about corporate media consolidation. Media Democracy Days in Vancouver take place from November 11-13.
“Reclaim Your Radio” kicks off at noon ET with live coverage from Parliament Hill originating from CHUO in Ottawa. At 1pm, the broadcast moves to stations across the country: CKDU in Halifax, CKUT in Montreal, CKLN in Toronto, CHRW in London, CJLY in Nelson, CJSF in Vancouver and CHLY in Nanaimo. For more information, visit NCRA.ca/reclaim. Tune in to the broadcast live via CFRC 101.9fm or CFRC.ca from 4-6pm or hear it rebroadcast overnight from Monday to Tuesday, starting at 1am.
